Chapter Fifteen

Mike walked into the living room and smiled. He was holding a bottle of red wine in one hand and a bunch of flowers in the other. What a guy, Zara thought. She blushed slightly, walked over to him and pecked him on the cheek with her warm red lips. ‘I’ll get a couple of glasses. On my life, I’ve had the worst day.’

Mike sat down and looked about the front room. He’d been here before, but he’d not really noticed how nice this place was. The last time he was there, he’d only had one thing on his mind. But, taking in the place properly, he saw that the living room was cosy: grey velvet sofa, thick silver carpet, and hints of pink in the wallpaper. It was clear Zara was a woman who took care over her home. It was nothing like his gaff which needed a woman’s touch, a good cleaning, a bit of warmth.

Zara was back, glasses clinking in her hands. She sat down next to him, eager to crack open the wine. She needed something to help her relax, get her mind off her stress. She was in the mood for romance. She reached over for the TV remote and turned it down. ‘So our Brian got rushed into hospital this morning. He’s my youngest and he was out last night, on them balloons.’

Mike was listening, concerned. ‘I hope he’s alright? Have you had any more news from the ward?’

Zara dropped her head as she poured two large glasses of wine. ‘The doctor is running some tests. They don’t know if he will be able to walk again, or if there is any brain damage.’ Her voice broke with emotion as she got through the full details.

Mike placed his warm hand on her shoulder. ‘He’ll be fine. These doctors are amazing at what they do. They wouldn’t have sent you home if they thought it was touch and go.’

Zara lifted her drink and took a large mouthful. ‘I hope so, I bloody hope so.’ Her mobile phone started ringing and she glanced at the screen before she clutched it in her hand. ‘One minute, it’s Tyler. I need to speak with him.’

Mike clocked that it was a mobile number flashing on the screen – not an approved prison call. Zara went into the kitchen and Mike held his ear to the door, making sure he heard everything.

‘Hiya son, sorry I’ve not been answering. I’ve been at the hospital with Brian all morning. He’s had some kind of an attack after sucking on them balloons.’ Zara held the mobile away from her ear as Tyler shouted down the phone. ‘Calm down, I know you warned him about them just like we all have. The doctors don’t know if he will have any lasting damage or if he will be able to walk again. You said it was harmless fun, we thought they were safe.’ There was a silence on the call and Zara had to ask Tyler if he was still there.
